Meeting between the International Labour Organization and Members of Parliament on 11 November 2009
13 November 2009 The Directorate of the ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean received three Members of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago upon their request, on Wednesday 11 November 2009 in the ILO Office in Port of Spain.
Dr. Roodal Moonilal, MP for Oropouche East, Mr. Harry Partap, MP for Cumuto/Manzanilla, and Senator Wade Mark made known their concerns about labour migration and a number of labour issues. There was a very useful exchange of views and information on the management of labour migration, working conditions, including occupational safety and health, and international labour standards, all of which are issues relating to the Decent Work Agenda. During this dialogue, the ILO informed the Members of Parliament about on-going and planned global and regional programmes related to the management of labour migration which is a challenge facing the international community. The procedures for submitting complaints to the ILO’s supervisory machinery – the Committee of Experts for the Application of Conventions and Recommendations, were also discussed.
The ILO’s Subregional Office for the Caribbean is committed to continuing its collaboration and programmes with the Ministry of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development of Trinidad and Tobago as well as with the employers’ and workers’ organizations and other stakeholders with an interest in promoting the Decent Work Agenda – namely, respect for rights at work and labour standards, employment promotion, social protection and social dialogue.
