The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC), adopted by the International Labour Conference at its 94th (Maritime) Session (Geneva, 7-23 February 2006), has set a milestone in the development of decent working conditions in the maritime industry.

The ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Government of Barbados will convene a Hemispheric Conference on the Rapid and Widespread Ratification and effective Implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006
 
Purpose
The purpose of this conference is to deepen the understanding of participants about the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 and, in the light of existing law and practice in the countries of the Western Hemisphere, to discuss solutions to any issues arising in the process of ratification and implementation, as well as possible regional cooperation.
 
Strategic objectives
The conference pursues the strategic objective of promoting and realizing fundamental principles and rights at work. The conference provides an opportunity to enhance participants’ awareness and understanding of the scope and provisions of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 and to assist them in identifying and addressing legislative gaps to enable them to more rapidly ratify and effectively implement the Convention.
