ILO report sees “volatile and uneven recovery” across economic sectors in 2010
GENEVA (ILO News) – The ILO’s Sectoral Activities Department has released new data showing that employment is recovering unevenly across sectors in the first half of 2010 and will continue to do so over the remainder of the year. The new ILO paper based on data from 13 sectors in 51 developed and developing countries says that while construction and manufacturing have lost a total of more than 5 millions jobs in the first quarter of 2010 (compared to 2009), the health sector has added almost 2.8 million jobs during the same period though compared to 2008. G20 urged to implement commitment to jobs, social protection SEOUL (ILO News) – Amidst widespread concern about the slow recovery in employment, Mr. Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), urged the G20 Leaders to implement their commitment to the central role of social protection and decent work in global recovery. Joint Press release - More open trade and well designed employment policies: key to supporting growth Geneva, 12 November 2010 (ILO, WTO, World Bank and OECD) - Open markets play a pivotal role in supporting growth and job creation, says a new joint report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the International Labour Organization, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. But, it adds, trade opening must be complemented by properly designed domestic policies, including employment and social protection policies to ensure that benefits from trade are widely shared.
