UN instruments on Rights of Indigenous Peoples promoted at regional seminar
United Nations instruments designed to promote and protect the rights of indigenous populations was the focus of a regional seminar held on 2-3 December 2009 at the Courtyard By Marriott, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Representatives of governments and indigenous organizations of six Caribbean countries gathered to learn of the two main instruments, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, adopted in 2007 and the International Labour Organization's Convention No. 169 on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, adopted in 1989. ILO Director-General says HIV/AIDS programmes crucial in crisis response
GENEVA (ILO News) – The ILO’s Global Jobs Pact adopted earlier this year to address the global economic and jobs crisis, can play a crucial role in an effective workplace response to the impact of the crisis on people living with HIV/AIDS, ILO Director-General Juan Somavia said in a statement issued for World AIDS Day on 1 December. Mr. Somavia said that “in times of economic crisis it is the most vulnerable that tend to be hit first and hardest. Those living with or affected by HIV and AIDS often belong to the most vulnerable segments of society. Suffering multiple disadvantages, they see their livelihoods and their very lives threatened.” (30 November 2009)

World AIDS Day 2009 feature on the Caribbean - ‘Coming out’ from isolation, stigma and discrimination in the Caribbean
The world’s current economic woes have already forced some governments to curtail HIV/AIDS programmes. This is why World AIDS Day focuses on universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support as a fundamental human right this year.
