The Domestic Workers Convention: Interview with ILO’s Manuela Tomei
The landmark treaty setting standards for the treatment of domestic workers that was adopted at the International Labour Conference in Geneva has been widely hailed as a milestone. The Convention and accompanying Recommendation on decent work for domestic workers aim at protecting and improving the working and living conditions of domestic workers worldwide - estimated to number anywhere between 53 million and 100 million. ILO Online spoke to Manuela Tomei, Director of the ILO’s Conditions of Work and Employment Programme. (21 June 2011)

Message by Juan Somavia Director-General of the International Labour Office on the occasion of World Day against Child Labour
This year’s World Day against Child Labour puts the spotlight on the plight of 115 million children involved in hazardous work – more than half of the estimated 215 million child labourers in the world. These children, the “silent majority”, are exposed to toxic chemicals, to extreme temperatures, to repetitive mind-numbing tasks, to isolation, to denigration. Their lives are being destroyed. Message by Juan Somavia on the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work
On this Day we recall that every year around 337 million people are victims of work accidents and more than 2.3 million people die because of occupational injuries or work-related diseases. From mines to chemical plants, from offices to fields, work-related accidents and illness take a heavier toll in terms of lives lost and disability than global pandemics such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. ILO Director-General sounds alarm on situation of workers in Bahrain
The Director-General of the International Labour Office, Juan Somavia, has reiterated the grave concern he expressed in a letter of 1 April to the Prime Minister of Bahrain at developments in the country, in particular over reports of widespread acts of anti-trade union discrimination against leaders and members of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions. “Making recovery work for women”: Statement by ILO Director-General Juan Somavia for International Women’s Day
One hundred years ago women took to the streets of Europe for the right to vote;  One hundred years ago women – mainly migrant women – took to the streets in the United States to demand safe working conditions.
