Statement by Guy Ryder, Director-General, International Labour Organization
on the occasion of International Women’s Day, 8 March 2013

Workplace violence assumes many forms and women are often particularly vulnerable, especially in the informal economy. Such violence is wrong and is a violation of the most basic human rights. Workplace violence including sexual harassment also represents a significant barrier to women’s access and equitable treatment and opportunities in the labour market. The ILO’s decent work mandate compels it to act against violence at work and to foster workplace environments founded on gender equality and respect. (7 March 2013)

On course for decent shipping

When the ILO adopted the Maritime Labour Convention in February 2006, Director-General Juan Somavia called it “making labour history”. ILO Director-General's message on the occasion of International Youth Day (August 12th)
Facing an unprecedented youth employment crisis, government, employer and worker representatives of the ILO’s 185 member States attending the International Labour Conference in June 2012 issued a strong and urgent Call for Action to address this unprecedented crisis stating: “Unless immediate and vigorous action is taken, the global community confronts the grim legacy of a lost generation”.
